Guitar Lessons
If you have any questions about my music or taking guitar lessons (assuming that you are close to Columbia, Missouri) you are welcome to email me at [email protected], or fill out the contact form on this page. My approach to teaching guitar is threefold: 1. Fretboard Freedom. Equip musicians with the tools they need to master any song they desire to play or compose. This includes a thorough exploration of the major scale, scale pattern recognition, interval shapes, triads, diatonic chord function, arpeggios, pentitonics, chromatic approach tones, and finally, modal improvisation. Note: All of the tools presented here are applicable for mastering any scale and it's associated modes, including the Melodic Minor, Harmonic Minor and Harmonic Major scales. I think it is important to point out that all these are tools of music theory, and learning them will make you agile and fleet of finger on the Fretboard. But don't get overwhelmed with all this. As my friend Dave Deloach says "It is music theory, not music fact. It has never been proven." 2. Rhythm Is The Key! The GOD-Given Stuff. This is a thorough discussion of strumming, finger picking, picking, practicing with a time source and playing with other musicians. Note: I can't emphasize enough how critical the concept of rhythm is! As I have constantly proclaimed to my students, "Rhythm is what allows us to play together!" Rhythm is sound in the context of time, and as a musician, finding your place in that passing of time. Rhythm is compelling, elusive and mysterious! Rhythm is abjectly profound and is the supremely critical component in the successful performance of any song. 3. The Rest Of The Story This is the fun stuff, a practical lab demonstrating how to put into practice all of the tools previously presented, in the context of worship and prayer. The first two sections might be thought of as "the Law", and this one as "Grace." "Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith." Galatians 3:24. This is a video I put on youTube talking about how to get great tone out of your amp.
